“ Sensitive spirited kids feel emotions, see sights, hear sounds, and smell odors to a degree that most of us mortals will never know. “ Mary Sheedy Kurcinka
Sensitive children may grow up to become amazing poets, artists or humanitarians. They are very nurturing and can form deep connections with others.
They can be easily overstimulated by sights, sounds, and activities. They are the kids who get sick more easily and absorb family stresses. Managing sensations can be exhausting for them.
Our society is overloaded with sensory input from electronics, bright lights and fast-paced living. If you have a sensitive child, you can help them manage their stimulation levels. You can watch them to see when they are starting to get agitated or overexcited. Shopping centers, fairs, beaches and parties are common places for overstimulation.
You can ask your child what specifically is bothering them and help them. You can teach them to be aware when they are getting overstimulated so they can breathe and take a break. You can help lessen the stimulation around them by limiting media time for TV and video games. You can also be aware if you are carrying a lot of stress yourself. By managing your stress, you can help your sensitive child to not be affected by it.
If your child does get overstimulated, you can help them to stop and sit down. You can give them a hug or rub their back to help calm and reset their nervous system. If you feel they’re being affected by family stress levels, you can talk it out and help them to express their feelings when they are old enough.
Making sure your child gets good rest will be helpful. We are all more prone to irritability when we’re tired. Sensitive kids can have trouble unwinding and getting to sleep. Let them nest with blackout shades, soft pillows and decluttered rooms. If your child is a little older, teach them to journal before bed to let go of any stresses from the day.
Bumblebee breath is a great yoga technique to help kids calm their minds. To do this you simply breathe in and hum while exhaling gently covering your eyes and ears. It soothes the nervous system and clears the mind. You can do this with your child before sleep.
If you’re sensitive too, watch your level of stimulation and stress to help both you and your child be the most well.
Remember, to help your child feel good about themselves with positive labels like tenderhearted, selective and caring. Let them know they might grow into a great chef or designer someday so they can appreciate who they are.
